The Magpies

What are the following lines describing?

1. ‘The bracken made their bed’

They used braken to make their bed they had no matrice.

2. ‘Tom’s hand was strong to the plough’

His hand was like a blade.

3. ‘But all the beautiful crops soon went / to the mortgage man instead’

They had to take out the crops because he didn’t have enough money to look after them.

4. ‘Old Tom’s gone light in the head’

He went light headed.

5. ‘The farm’s still there. Mortgage corporations / couldn’t give it away’

The mortgage man couldn’t take their house away because he paid the bank all the money now.
